Shabby chic living rooms are perfect for people who love the vintage look, but still want an air of freshness in the room. Shabby chic is the perfect mix of vintage, fun, and modern elements. I have to say I adore the look this gives.
Here’s what you need for a shabby chic living room!
Shabby chic is all about comfort, so you need some comfy furniture to lie back and relax on. Big plush sofas and chairs are a must! They can be any colour or pattern you like though, so get creative when making your choice. You could go for stripes, floral, or a plain colour. Mixing and matching your furniture is a really good idea and can add personality to your room.
Floral patterns are a must in shabby chic decor. It doesn’t matter where you include them, just make sure you do! You can include them on cushions, curtains, or other accessories. As much or as little as you want too! Did you know that using a pattern all over in a room can actually make it appear larger? It might not sound like it’s going to work, but it does!
Lots of White
White is usually the base colour of shabby chic. It helps to set off any patterns you choose to use, and you can afford to go all out with your accessories when white is your base colour. If you wanted, you could use white all over. This is one popular way to use shabby chic decor. It can look very luxurious and expensive! I'd happily paint all my walls white, but I have a dog who likes to get muddy and shake!
Distressed furniture adds to the vintage feel of shabby chic. You can even distress your furniture yourself if you want to get creative! There are a number of things you can buy from places like Ikea, and then distress yourself the way you like it. If not, don’t panic, you can buy new furniture that has been made to appear distressed. You could even go second hand if you wanted (sites like eBay are great for this, or even your local Freecycle)!
Luxurious lighting makes shabby chic look a little less shabby. Chandeliers and similar light fittings look amazing!
Adding texture to your room will stop it from looking flat and cold. Use as many as you’d like to make it look more ‘3D’ and add personality. Your goal should be to make your guests want to stroke things as they move around the room! Carpets and flooring can be a good way to add texture, as can throws and cushions. Look on sites like Pinterest if you need more inspiration.
Quirky ornaments help to add more personality to your room. You can find them online or in charity shops. Always keep an eye out for quirky things that will make your living room look unique and one of a kind! I recently found an elephant ornament that I absolutely adore (I hang bracelets on his trunk)!
Use these tips in your living room and you’ll achieve the shabby chic look in no time. I'd love it if you left a comment with your thoughts on Shabby Chic living rooms! I've been making a shabby chic pinterest board which you can see here.
