Most of us love being invited to a special occasion or event, as it gives us the opportunity to dress up. (As well as the excuse to buy a new dress!) This is by far one of the most exciting parts about being asked to attend any sort of party or event!
That being said, when those beautiful, modern wedding invitations or party invites come through the door, we panic a little. Yes, we can’t wait to attend another fabulous celebration. However, finding ways to ensure that our hair and makeup looks good, can sometimes be a little tricky. This is especially true when an event or celebration is being held outside. (For many of us, this is our worst nightmare!)
To help ensure that no matter what the occasion, your hair and makeup stays looking fantastic throughout the event, here are a few tips:
Primer is your best friend
When it comes to events, especially long ones like weddings with lots of lights, primer really is your best friend. Between the ceremony itself, the reception and after-party, weddings can be incredibly long events. This can lead to our hair and makeup ending up in a bit of a mess.
To prevent this from happening, and to make sure that your makeup looks fantastic all day, priming your skin is crucial. Before applying your foundation, pop a long-lasting primer onto your skin. The primer will act as a glue and keep your makeup in place for longer.
Top Tip: As well as priming your skin, don’t forget to prime your eyelids to keep your eye makeup in place for longer. I actually concealer on my eyelids to keep my eye makeup where I want it.
Choose the best type of makeup
When it comes to picking the best style of makeup, it’s essential that you take the type of event that you are attending into account. For instance, for a wedding, your makeup should be soft and subtle. For a party, however, it could be a little more eye-catching.
For the perfect wedding look, opt for a romantic style of makeup. Be careful of your contouring and make sure to keep things as soft and subtle as possible. Make your skin glow with some blusher and a dusting of illuminating powder - perfect for a sweet romantic look! More natural looks generally mean less makeup, so you don't have to worry about it!
Pick one area to focus on
When it comes to doing your makeup for an event or special occasion, choose one area to focus on. If you love an eye look that stands out, such as a smokey eye, it’s best to opt for a neutral lip look. Or, if you have a bold, bright lip colour that you just have to wear, make sure to keep your eyes simple. If I'm honest I tend to shy away from bold lips at events, simply because I know I'm going to have to check it every time I drink something! But at the same time if you know you're going to be crying, make sure your eye makeup is waterproof!
Practice your hair
When it comes to having the most beautiful hairdo for weddings and events, the most important thing that you can do is practice. This is especially important if you plan on styling your hair in a way that you haven’t tried before. Practice makes perfect, after all.
If you aren’t someone who is gifted when it comes to hair, consider getting a hairdresser to do you hair for you. Even if you decide to get a hairdresser to style your hair for you, it’s important that you have a practice beforehand (this is even more vital if you have an outfit that goes over your head!).
If you follow these tips your hair should be perfect and your makeup should look flawless, no matter what the weather, at your special occasions!
