One of my favourite rooms to do up is the kitchen. I think the interior design of kitchens is a bit different to other rooms in your house. Also, I find designing the look of a kitchen to be very enjoyable! So, I’ve decided to share some of my advice and tips with all of you!

Kitchen Counters

What’s unique about kitchens is that you have to have kitchen counters. You won’t find counters in any other room of your house. They’re there as a place for you to do all your kitchen work and prepare meals, etc. Your job is to decide on the type of counter you want for your kitchen. You can get modern looking kitchen counters or ones that appear more rustic. Also, think about the layout of the counters. To maximize space, many choose to have them go around the edges of the kitchen. But, if you have a big kitchen, you can also have a standalone counter in the centre of the room. This can double up as a sort of breakfast bar for people to sit and eat at. If my kitchen was bigger I would definitely have a breakfast bar!

Tile Style
Many people often wonder what the perfect flooring is for a kitchen. I always like to make a point of ruling out carpet right away. Why? Because there’s a chance you’ll spill things on the floor in a kitchen, and it can be hard to get out of a carpet (there's also the fire risk). Whereas using laminate flooring or cement tiles will make things a lot easier. My personal preference is tiling, purely because you can get much better designs. There are plenty of different styles out there, so pick one that you think will fit your kitchen perfectly. But, there’s nothing wrong with a laminate flooring in your kitchen either. I just find them to look a bit samey, and they can be a tad slippery if you’re wearing socks. My kitchen has solid stone tiles, which can be quite chilly on the feet but are so easy to keep clean!

Storage Space
Every kitchen needs to have storage space to keep things in. It will be the room in your house with the most cupboards and drawers. This is down to the fact that there’s so much stuff you need in a kitchen. You have to have a place to store cutlery, utensils and any other kitchen things. There will have to be a cabinet for your plates and bowls, and then another for glasses and mugs. We even have a cabinet purely for Tupperware (although it seems to be mostly lost lids at the moment)! When you’re designing your kitchen, make sure you get as much storage space in as possible. The more things you can store in places, the less clutter there will be on the counter tops!

Windows
I think that all kitchens need to have a good source of natural light. The more sunlight you can get in your kitchen, the better. A sunlit kitchen will be naturally illuminated and look far better than a dark one. You need to see what you’re doing in the kitchen, so there has to be sufficient light. But, you don’t want to have the light on all day, especially if it’s sunny out. Get big windows installed to let in all the light. This is what annoys me the most about our kitchen, it does get quite gloomy.. there's a big window but it's north facing, at least the living room & conservatory get more light facing south!
