After reading the first book, Dogs of Pilothead Sound, I was greatly looking forward to the sequel. I was not disappointed.
If anything 'The Song of Pilothead Sound' was even better than DOPS, which after reading DOPS I wouldn't have thought was possible.

Song of Pilothead Sound is wonderfully written, with beautiful description woven seamlessly through flawless narrative. If you have any doubts as to how wonderous the description is these doubts will very quickly be quashed. After reading both of these books I am now desperate to travel to Maine, and find the place these beautiful books are based on.

The characters are perfectly written, and as with DOPS I finished the book feeling that they weren't just characters in a book, but rather real life people who I had met and interacted with. The relationships between the characters are also developed immensely in The Song of Pilothead Sound, so much so that they reach dramatic peaks that make the reader wonder what on earth is going to happen on the next page. I am particularly fond of the friendship between Cass and Lawrie, and I am eagerly awaiting DOPS III to find out what happens next.

The animals in the book once again play a huge part in the story, and it wouldn't be the same without them. Often their interactions with their Person's are pure genius and often quite humorous.

I also really enjoyed the development of Abel's story, I find him to be a fascinating character, as well as all those he interacts with. It provides a very interesting interlude in the story, which is made all the better because of it.

All in all, The Song of Pilothead Sound is even better than DOPS, which before reading I hadn't thought was possible. While you probably could read this book without reading its predecessor I truly wouldn't recommend it. You'd be missing out on some truly wonderful writing and a fabulous experience.

I am eagerly awaiting DOPS III, the story development that comes with it, and of course the wonderful illustrations provided by the author C.S. Walkingheart.

I thoroughly recommend you buy this book & get reading!

Stay safe, x
