Salt of The Earth Crystal Classic Deodorant review

If I listed all the problems that I've ever had with various deodorants and anti-perspirants this post would be about 100 pages long... it's been more of a hate relationship than a love one. From experiencing contact dermatitis from a "sensitive skin" roll-on, to blocked pores from aerosols (despite washing off every single day), stains on clothing and not forgetting those that just plain didn't work! I am more sceptical about this selection of products than just about any other.

So I stumbled across this Salt Of The Earth natural deodorant and I thought "what's this?". Well it's a crystal deodorant which means it's a solid stick of Potassium Alum, which is a natural salt that has been used as a deodorant for hundreds of years!

It's 100% natural, it's vegan and vegetarian friendly, it's not tested on animals, it unisex and it won't leave marks on clothes. Sounds good doesn't it?

There's no Alumminium chloryhydrate (the main ingredient that causes issues in normal deodorants and anti-perspirants), no alchohol, no CFCs, no propellants (they make your aerosol spray), no parabens or perfumes (the smelly bits), no triclosan (no idea what this is, sounds like a dinosaur) and no mineral oils (gooood for you and the environment)!

Now I couldn't resist giving this a try, so I've been using it instead of my normal generic high street brand roll-on for a few days.

The first change is in how you apply it; either to damp skin after washing, or you run it under the tap before applying to dry skin. I found it easier to apply to dry skin, as I could make sure there was plenty of water on the crystal.. otherwise it can drag a bit.

At this point it's important to know the difference between a deodorant and an anti-perspirant... a deodorant stops the smells (this one does so naturally, the crystals stop the body odour) and anti-perspirants stop you form sweating (apparently).

During a normal day I move around a lot, not including actual exercise, so I was slightly concerned about whether or not I could manage without anti-perspirant. But I was pleasantly surprised. I found that using this I actually sweated less than when using a roll-on anti-perspirant, although of course this might not be the case when summer comes. Just going about day-to-day business; shopping, working, walking etc it certainly stood up well, and no residue left on either myself or my clothes which is a bonus!

I also used it when I was working out, and I've never liked the idea of anti-perspirants for activities that are meant to make you sweat.. sweating is natural and particularly during exercise it's pretty damn important! So yes I got sweaty using this, but I did not get smelly which is great!

So my verdict? I like it, a lot. I still have to remember to apply it in the bathroom, but that's not really an issue is it? It's comfortable to wear, I've had no adverse reactions at all, and it definitely does it's job as a deodorant. Personally, I've also found it stands up pretty well as an anti-perspirant too, but it's important to remember that this would vary from person to person. It's also good to remember that it is still quite chilly, so I will update you all in the warmer months!

The Salt of The Earth Crystal deodorants should also last longer than any you buy on the high street, just dry them off after applying to give them a longer life... meaning you save money too!

The Salt of The Earth Crystal Deodorant Classic is £4.96 for 90g (travel versions available) and you buy direct from Salt of The Earth.

You can also buy sprays or perfumed varieties online too.

Have you ever used a natural crystal deodorant? I'd love to know your thoughts!

Stay safe, x
