My Small Home Hacks for a Big Impact

I'm always looking for ingenious ways to make my home come alive! There's no point having a home if I'm not going to make an effort to make it look like it belongs to me. A lot of home decor tips are about making big changes that could cost you a lot of money. But I prefer the small things that make a big difference. I love finding a way to add more character to a room by doing something that only takes me five minutes. So here are some of my favourite ways to give my home more personality and pizazz!

Touches of Colour in Unexpected Places
For some reason, there are lots of places in our home that we just unquestionably leave blank. I'm talking about things like the sides of doors or drawers, or the inside of table legs. Instead of painting or varnishing them, we often leave them plain. I suppose the logic is that they're things we don't always see. But just because they're sometimes out of sight, it doesn't mean they always are. I think we should paint these places with bright colours so that they reveal an unexpected surprise whenever you expose them! I painted the legs on a table the other day; it's not a big thing but it makes me smile every time I see it!

Making Temporary But Solid Decorations
Renting a home can be tough. You can't do whatever you want with it, which often means no hammering nails into the wall or painting complicated murals. I have several solutions to this problem, though. Once upon a time, you might have been limited to using Blu Tack or sellotape to put things on the wall. But now there are lots of clever products that stick things on and won't leave any marks. For example, I love using Glue Dots to attach lightweight decorations to my walls. You can also use Command hooks if you want to hang anything up but you can't drill any holes (I used these to hang my noticeboard in my recent desk styling post).

Repurposing Old Items
Finding new uses for old things is one of my favourite things to do. I'm always impressed by the ideas that people who are much cleverer than me always come up with. And sometimes I'll have a stroke of genius too! I've seen lots of things you can do with old items. They include tying curtains back with necklaces or using an old book cover to hide something you don't want to look at. I love the idea of repurposing old clothes and using them to create cushion covers and other home items. I currently have a teapot being used for flowers!

Playing with Lampshades
Lighting can make such a big difference to a room, so it's interesting to see what you can do with it. One of the ways you can affect the light in your room is by changing a lampshade. I've seen some really cool ideas, including coating the inside of a shade with glitter for a sparkly effect. If you have a dark lampshade, it looks incredible if you do a cutout design by poking holes into it for a starry effect! In some rooms I actually need to buy lampshades first as they are just bare bulbs at the moment (oops).

It doesn't take much to make some important changes to your home. I love how much of a difference you can make with these small adjustments.

Let me know what you think! How do you make the most of small spaces in your home?

Stay safe, x
