Does your living room lack a focal point? Or is your current focal point blending into the background rather than standing out? Your living room should be your favourite room and a focal point should make it more personal to you. Whether it’s through the use of art or colour, your living room should grab attention and bring sophistication to your home. This how-to guide will help you rejuvenate an existing focal point or help you pick a new one.

Wall Art
Art is a very personal addition to a living area. It can evoke emotions and nostalgia, as well as giving some character to your walls. Large colourful canvases always make a statement. Your art should say something about you, so choose it wisely. Don’t use it to just fill the space on your walls. If chosen correctly you can decorate the rest of your living room around this particular art piece. Go for what you like. If you like a modern look, why not go for lettering or pop art prints. For a more traditional feel, look for paintings of landscapes or architectural drawings. You should also consider different hanging techniques. Does it need to be hung up on a wall or can it be propped against it? Could you print an image onto wallpaper and paste it on? Search photo wallpaper for home to find some wonderful examples.
Also consider other means of art such as sculpture or tapestry. These can look just as fabulous as wall art and create fabulous talking points.

Furniture

Sofas are often the most important piece of furniture in a living space. So why not make them stand out?
Reupholster or buy your sofa and accompanying armchairs in fun, bright prints and patterns. These can be as outrageous or as basic as you like. Just make sure they stand out.
You can then use neutral colours for the rest of your living room so they become the most predominant feature. This will immediately be what people will see when they step inside.
If you would prefer something that can be replaced easily, go for
printed throws and scatter cushions. Use these on a black sofa to highlight them even more.

Fireplace

If you’re lucky enough to have a fireplace, it should definitely be your focal point. Nobody ever said that fireplaces had to be dull and boring. Paint your fireplace in a
statement colour to bring it back to life. If your fireplace is surrounded by brickwork, why not paint the bricks the same colour as the fireplace. Black and dark greys are ideal for bringing some drama into your home. Also, think about the area surrounding the fireplace. Use shelving above the fireplace to showcase some of your favourite things, such as books or trinkets.

You should now know exactly what you have to do to create an attention-grabbing focal point in your living area. It should be spot that draws your eye every time you enter the room. Make it innovative and don’t be afraid to get creative with your styling.

I'd love to know your tips for creating a focal point in your living room, for me it's my fireplace.. what's yours? Drop me a comment below!

Stay safe, x
