I’m always reading homestyle magazines and swooning over the latest interior fashion and trends. If only my house looked like those in the pictures! But then I started to notice something. All the latest styles looked very austere. Take minimalism for example: it looks very chic and cool, but actually, when you think about it, how comfy is it? I guess not that much! I can't imagine having empty shelves.. where would my books go?! It made me realise what I try to achieve when I redecorate my home... Stylishness and comfort. Usually, these two things don’t go hand in hand. But I think I’ve almost cracked it, though. I’ve done quite well in designing my home so it’s both stylish and comfortable! Here’s how I did it... Trendy Materials This tip is especially handy if you are redesigning your kitchen. You’ll need to use materials for worktops and surfaces that are functional and easy to use. They especially need to be simple to clean! There’s nothing worse than a dirty kitchen. Metal surfaces look very elegant and can be simply wiped clean but fingerprints would drive me mad. There’s also the advantage that most modern cleaning agents work well on them. But if you want a bit more style opt for granite, quartz or marble. These come in a range of patterns and styles and are also very hygienic. Tiles as a worksurface can look lovely and cosy (we have one section like this) but I'm always cleaning tea stains in the grout! Add Cushions and Fabric Moving out of the kitchen now and into the rooms in which we relax. I’m talking bedrooms and living rooms! Adding cushions and pillows to your furniture can add a splash of colour as well as creating a cosy space for you to curl up in after a busy day. Adding throws and blankets to the mix can add even more colour. You don’t have to restrict all this cosiness to your bedrooms and living rooms – take it out into your conservatory too! Fashionable cushions and fabrics can brighten up your conservatory furniture as well! I always have blankets and throws on the sofa, chairs and bed. Brighten Up Your Walls
The colour of your walls also adds to your rooms’ overall comfort. Painting in bright colours or decorating them in lively wallpaper will help to boost your mood and feel comfortable in your home. You can also choose colours and patterns that are currently in fashion. Why not pick some of the styles you see on the page of Home and Design? You don’t have to stick to one style through your whole house – mix things up in each room! This also gives you a reason to let your kids get creative. Give them the opportunity to design their bedrooms and be amazed at where their imaginations take them! I've just painted a wall in our dining room a gorgeous dark mulberry (sounds odd, looks good).. it's definitely warmed the room up compared to the cold magnolia that was there before. Functional Furniture There are some furniture and appliances we will always need in our homes. But because they are essentials, it doesn’t mean we need to settle for a drab and boring style! Add some comfort with these stylish radiators. Or funky, yet immensely comfy, chairs! When it comes to buying important pieces for your home, think outside the box. By doing so, you’ll almost certainly find pieces that are perfectly stylish as well as comfy! I'd love to know how you style your house for comfort? What's your cosiest item? Drop me a comment! Stay safe, x
