So I don't know about you guys, but it's at this time of year that I start to crave cosiness. It's cold, wet and grey outside which means I want to curl up on my sofa, with low lighting, a warm blanket (or 3), a book or movie and a hot drink... for me that is perfection. Because of my love of all things cosy, I'm always looking for new ways to style my home, so when I saw an article on winter interior trends I thought I'd share a few of the ideas here..
You can read the original article on saving money with winter interior trends by clicking this link, which includes very handy money saving tips too!
The first tip is all about the colours you use and I think this is so important! Apparently darker "moodier" colours are the in-thing.. think grey (no not 50 shades, 2 or 3 will be enough) as a base to build on with the occassional colour pop with accessories. If you prefer something lighter and more Scandinavian then light neutrals can still provide that cosy feeling if you mix materials to provide some texture and depth.
Once you've decided on your base colours, think about adding a few accents. Traditionally this meant a feature wall, but you can get bored of those quite quickly so go for something smaller... perhaps choose some turquoise or mustard cushions if you've gone for a grey base, or a cream throw if the rest of the style is darker, just make it stand out without dominating. Plus if you decide you want different coloured statements it's a lot easier to buy new cushions than choose a new paint colour!
A great way to bring some cosiness in and save money is upcycling... this could mean hunting for something specific or giving something you already own a new lease of life. A good example is how I revamped our ugly bookcase, which literally needed just 2 coats of paint to make a real difference, which you can read about in my bookcase makeover. If you're feeling a bit more ambitious you could try re-upholstering something you love that needs a bit of TLC.
Another tip from the article was going retro in terms of your technology; I think we'd all agree that a vintage look radio is far softer on the eyes than a high tech sound system, but obviously this will depend on your personal preferences and needs. I've recently bought a record player that also plays via bluetooth from my phone, so while it looks retro it is bang up to date and gives me so much joy from old vinyl that I was unable to play without it!
Personally I found the tips in the article really useful and the extra money-saving tips are definitely worth bearing in mind if you decide to bring some extra cosy into your home.
The research for the article was conducted by My Voucher Codes who I can happily recommend as I'm always looking there for deals and codes to save money.
I'd love to know if you have any tips of your own for making your home cosy and comfortable this winter but without it costing a fortune. If you do please share them in the comments below!
Stay safe and warm, x
