Now we've all been there.. it's freezing cold and you're weighing up whether or not you really want to strip down to get in the bath or shower. Sure when you're in the water you'll be warm, but what about when you get out? You're certain to get hypothermia right?! For me, the sheer pleasure of being under hot running water wins so I grit my teeth against the cold afterwards. But apparently not all Brits are doing the same!
A recent survey by Geberit AquaClean found that 33% of Brits halve the amount of time they spend in the bathroom in the colder months compared to the summer. EEK! Considering the average time throughout the year is 30 minutes a day, the fact that over a quarter of Brits are then halving that is quite surprising.
Apparently people in Britain don't just spend less time on personal hygiene, they also spend less money. The average is £29.57 a month, but 18% reduce spending in winter. I don't think I quite spend that much, but some 3% spend more than £100 a month, while 9% spend less than £5. I'm somewhere in the middle!
There are a couple of reasons why we probably don't feel the need to wash as often during winter. It's cooler so we don't get hot, sweaty and smelly! Many people cut down on physical exercise (even though they shouldn't). For others it's simply because the darker days and longer nights leave them feeling more tired so they prefer to stay in bed longer!
For us ladies of course, we're covering up more which means that leg shaving etc isn't quite as important. The study also showed that we spend less time on our feet during winter.. probably because we shove them in socks most of the time.
But all of this pales in comparison with the final finding from the survey... prepare yourself.
10% of the adults questioned said that they don't change their underwear every day. Wait it gets worse....
1% said that they change theirs less than once a week. EEEEEEEEK.
There are ways to keep yourself clean, fresh and healthy as it gets colder:
Do you cut back on your time in the bathroom during winter or do you persevere through the chill? Drop me a comment!
