Heading to the spa is one of those things we all like to indulge in at some point in our lives if we can afford it. It's a time to relax and let any of the stresses of the day to day life simply wash away. Relaxation and a bit of time for yourself is sometimes just what the doctor ordered, so if you can get that feeling in your own home then you are on to a winner, am I right? So I thought I would share with you some of the ways that you can create that spa experience in your own home.

Invest in your bathroom
One of the first things you could potentially do would be to invest in your bathroom. Many people feel that they could do with replacing their bathroom suite, and by doing this you give a whole new sense of atmosphere to your bathroom. It might mean researching new bathroom sink cabinets or adding a separate shower cubicle to your bathroom and having a new bath. Something like a corner tub or a roll top perhaps. Redesigning your bathroom space can really help you to achieve that spa feeling.

If you can’t change it improve it
However, changing your whole bathroom can be a pricey job, and is actually one of the most expensive jobs to do in your home. So if you don’t have the funds right now you could consider improving what you have. It might be as simple as changing fixtures like taps or the flush on your toilet. It could be that giving it a big clean could make the world of difference, or adding other features like changing lighting, flooring or adding new tiles or colours to the walls. In my own bathroom, I just changed out the side bath panel and put a cupboard under the sink and brought in some decorative touches.

Create the right ambience
You also need to create the right ambience as if you were actually in a spa, so this is when candles could create the perfect setting. They offer just enough light while still being useful and making it a relaxing environment. You could even get scented ones for added effect or to avoid naked flame get battery operated candles. You might also want to download some relaxing sounds. Anything from nature and water sounds to relaxing tones and chilled out music.

Enjoy some pampering
Having a spa experience at home is all about the DIY pampering, so indulge yourself and give yourself the biggest treat. Invest in some new bath soak or even head to a store that specializes in things like bath bombs. You could also buy yourself some new creams and serums so you can give yourself your own pedicure and manicure. You might also like to get a new face mask so that your face can get some love while you soak in a warm bath. Bliss.

Add a relaxing scent
It is also worth remembering that there is a certain scent you smell when you are in a spa, so creating that at home could be the ideal way to continue creating the atmosphere you are hoping to create. This is when essential oils could play a huge part. Relaxing scents like Lavender or something invigorating like Peppermint or calming like chamomile might be options to consider. Burning the oils with a tea light is a great way to infuse your bathroom. Other options to consider would be humidifiers that can let out the scent or even things like incense sticks for a more infused and elaborate scent.

Treat yourself to some new accessories
Don’t forget to treat yourself in other ways as well. When you head to the spa you get to indulge in white fluffy robes and slippers, so why not get the same for at home? You could also enjoy things like new towels to really help create the spa look in your own bathroom. You can pick things up like this very reasonably on the high street and they can be used time and time again.

It is all on the lighting
It is time to think about the lighting side of things in your bathroom. Spas tend to be dimly lit and this is to encourage you to relax so that you are less stimulated by bright lights. A dimmer switch on your bathroom could help make all of the difference, especially if you don’t want to use too many candles.

Get rid of the tech
Finally, while bright lights can stimulate your mind so can your iPad or Smartphone screen. Use this time to put the technology away and if you do want to do something why not consider reading a book.

I hope that this has given you some inspiration on how to create a spa experience in your own home.
