Home maintenance is something that’s irritating but necessary like dental check-ups. If we don’t see the dentist on a regular basis, our teeth end up in a bad state, and it’s the same when it comes to our homes. If you want to make sure that your beloved home stays ‘healthy’, regular maintenance is a must. The problem for a lot of us is that we don’t know what we should be checking in our homes, which leads to us missing the important things. So that you don’t have to stress, I’ve done the research about the most essential home maintenance. You’ll be pleased to know that there’s not as much to do as you would think, but I've listed some of them below... Let’s start inside It’s not just your home’s exterior that needs checking over, the interior and some of your appliances also do. The boiler. Most companies recommend that you get your boiler serviced at least once a year, to make sure that it’s working properly. This is important as if your boiler is broken, not only can it make your energy bill more expensive but it can also be dangerous. To find out more or book a service, have a browse online for boiler servicing companies. Damp and mold. Hopefully, your home hasn’t got either of these things. But if it has, the sooner you get them treated, the better. The most common places for damp and mold are in the basement and loft, so it’s wise to go around them with a torch checking. Look for wet patches, areas where the paint has bubbled, or the wallpaper has peeled, and any areas of wall that has dark marks on it. Notice any of these things - make sure to call a specialist immediately. Leaks. Leaky plumbing can occur anywhere. But again, the places where it’s most common are out of sight - the basement and loft. Plus, anywhere else in your home you would notice a leak, but as you rarely go into these rooms, it’s something that’s easy to miss. Use a torch to check for any areas of standing water or drips - if you see any call a plumber. Time to talk outside Most of the maintenance work your home will need will be outside. So make sure to take your time when performing checks. Look for areas of standing water. Walk around your home looking for any areas of standing water. These indicate that there’s a drainage problem. This is one of the most important checks you can do as standing water can cause damage to your home’s foundations. If you notice any standing water, call a contractor straight away. Check your roof. Okay, this one you might need a little help with. You need to check your roof for two reasons; to ensure the guttering isn’t blocked and to check that the roof isn’t missing any tiles. If you’re not a fan of heights, it might be worth calling in a roofer, to do this for you. So there you have it, the essential maintenance checks we all need to be making. See, I told you there wasn’t that much to do! Is there anything you think I've missed? If so, drop me a comment to let me know! Stay safe,x *This is a collaborative post*
