Lack of sleep has such a big impact on your health. Most of us already know that but a lot of us aren’t getting a good night’s sleep. Increased stress at work and all of the extra distractions of modern life make it hard to relax and get proper rest. But it’s so important because there is a long list of negative health effects that come along with lack of sleep.

Creating a good environment for sleep is one of the most important things, so you need to pay extra attention to your bedroom. Get good quality
designer beds that are actually going to be comfortable and make sure that the room is free of distractions and you’ll find it easier to get to sleep. But things are rarely that easy and you might still struggle to get to sleep. In that case, you might have to try something else. These are some of the most unusual ways to improve your sleep patterns.

Do Some Colouring
Adult colouring books are so popular at the moment. Art therapy is being used by so many people to help relieve stress and anxiety and it’s great for sleeping as well. One of the biggest mistakes that people make when they’re trying to get to sleep is using their phone or laptop before bed. The blue light in a computer screen confuses your brain and makes it think that it’s still daytime, so sleep won’t come. Reading is a good alternative, however, it’s a little too stimulating sometimes so your mind is still racing when you come to go to sleep. But colouring books are a fairly passive activity that doesn’t require too much brain power and it helps you to relax and unwind slowly before you go to sleep.

Meditation
People often think of meditation as a spiritual or religious thing but it doesn’t have to be. It’s a good way to clear your mind of any worries and stresses that might be keeping you up at night. There are some great guided meditation programs that you can do before bed to help you unwind and sleep better. The Calm app has plenty of great ones on there but you do have to pay a subscription for it. If you don’t want to pay, you can just do a search on Youtube and find plenty of free ones. It might seem a bit odd to start with but if you go in with an open mind and embrace it, you might find it very helpful.

Get Rid Of Clocks
This sounds like a strange thing to do but there is a lot of logic behind it. Most people, when they’re struggling to sleep, become aware of how late it is and start calculating how many hours they’ve got left before they need to wake up. You’re going to start getting anxious because you know that it’s already too late to get a good night’s sleep. Then you’ll start trying harder and harder to get to sleep but the harder you try, the more stressed out you’ll become and that’s just going to make things worse. If you remove the clocks from the room and remove that pressure, you’ll be more relaxed and it’ll be easier to drift off to sleep.

If you’ve tried everything else and you still can’t get a good night’s sleep, try some of these alternatives instead.
